    For this item, we let L be the length. With this representation, the value of the width becomes, L + 1.4. The area of a rectangle is calculate by multiplying the dimensions.

    Area = Length x Width

    Area = (L) x (L + 1.4) = 13.95

    The value of L from the equation is 3.1 and L+1.4 is equal to 4.5. Thus, the length is 3.1 ft and width is 4.5 ft.
