First, you distribute. You multiply 1/3 by 3x and by 12 so you have:
3/3x+12/3
Then, you simplify:
x+4
If you need to solve for x, then the problem would be:
1/3 (3x+12) = 0
And of course, I've already shown how to distribute and simplify so you'd have:
x+4=0
Subtract 4 from both sides to get x alone and make sure the equation is even:
x=-4
