A rectangular garden plot is 18 ft long and 12 ft wide. The owner of the garden wants to plant tomato plants in the plot. Each plant needs a space that is approximately 2 ft by 2 ft. Which estimate best approximates the number of tomato plants that can be planted in the plot? 20 50 110 220

    Since your plot is 18 ft x 12 ft, that means you can plant a grid of tomato plants that's (18/2) x (12/2) = 9 x 6 = 54.

    And of the available choices, 50 is the closest to 54.

    I multiplied 18 times 12 to get the area of the garden, and then I took 2 times 2 to get the area of the plant space. After I got both of the areas, 216 and 4, I divided them and got 54. So I think that 50 is the best estimate of the number of tomato plants that can be planted in the plot.
