    4.8 hours

    Step-by-step explanation:

    Let the time taken to hike uphill be T

    Let the time taken taken to hike downhill = 8 - T

    The average speed of walking up = 2 mph

    Average speed of walking down = 3mph

    Distance hiked uphill = Distance hiked downhill

    Speed = distance / time

    Distance = Speed * Time

    2T = 3 (8 - T)

    2T = 24 - 3T

    2T + 3T = 24

    5T = 24

    T = 24/5

    T = 4.8 hours

    Time taken to hike uphill = 4.8hours
