    We will use N for the number of spikes Naiomi had and V for Vicki.

    N = 3V

    N + V = 20

    We know N = 3V, so we can use substitution. Plug 3V in for N.

    (3V) + V = 20

    4V = 20

    V = 5

    N = 3V = 3 (5) = 15

    So Naiomi had 15 spikes, and Vicki had 5 spikes.
