Ab+ac=a (b+c)
a is the common factor
factor each
27x=3*3*3*x
9y=3*3*y
common factor is 3*3 or 9
9 (3x) + 9 (y) = 9 (3x+y)

Both numbers have 9 as their biggest shared factor so you take out 9:
9 (3x + y)
