    496 square feet

    Step-by-step explanation:

This is one of those "area of the path" questions. You would have to draw a diagram as such:

    1. Draw the rectangular garden with the corresponding measurements

    2. Draw a larger rectangle around the rectangular garden such that there is a 4 feet spacing around all dimensions of the garden

After doing this you can calculate the path's area alone through calculation of the larger rectangle subtracted by the garden/smaller rectangle.

The dimensions of the larger rectangle created would be the dimensions of the smaller rectangles plus the 4 ft on either side:

Dimensions of Larger rectangle : 40 feet and 30 feet

Dimensions of Smaller rectangle (Given) : 22 feet and 32 feet

From this you can calculate the area of the two rectangles:

Area of Larger rectangle: 1200 square feet

Area of Smaller rectangle: 704 square feet

Now subtract the smaller rectangle's area from the larger to get the area of the path:

    1200 square feet - 704 square feet = 496 square feet
