Is x = - 4 a valid solution this linear equation? 2x + 9 (x - 1) = 8 (2x + 2) - 5

    To check to see if - 4 is a solution, substitute the - 4 in for x.

    2 (-4) + 9 (-4-1) = 8 (2 (-4) + 2) - 5

    If both sides are equal then x = - 4 is a solution.
