    Travel time when Carlos traveled at 52 miles/hr = t1

    Travel distance when Carlos traveled at 52 miles/hr = 52 t1

    Travel time when Maria traveled at 54 miles/hr = t2

    Travel distance when Maria traveled at 54 miles/hr = 54 t2

    total time

    t1 + t2 = 4.1

    total distance

    52 t1 + 54 t2 = 217

    (t1 + t2 = 4.1) * 52

    52 t1 + 52 t2 = 213.2

    Subtract last 2 equations

    2 t2 = (217-213.2)

    2 t2 = 3.8

    t2 = 1.9

    t1 = 2.2

    Hours Maria driven = 2.2 hours
