    This is the concept of algebra, let the total amount of sales be x:

    Total income=[base salary]+[commissions]

    base salary=$1700

    commissions=8/100*x=0.08x

    hence:

    2240=0.08x+1700

    solving for x we get:

    540=0.08

    x=540/0.08

    x=$6750

    We conclude that the total sales was $6750
