If we have 2+1/4 for a batch and want 2/3rds of that, we multiply (2+1/4) by 1/3 to get 2/3+1/12 (we can just multiply the denominator by 3 to divide by 1/3) = 8/12+1/12=9/12=3/4 (we get 8/12 by figuring out that 12/3 = 4 so we multiply 2/3 by 4/4). Since we need 2/3rds, we then multiply 3/4 by 2 to get 6/3 or 3/2.
