    Can of popcorn = P

Can of mixed nuts = M

    M+P = 240 ... eqn 1

    5P + 8M = 1614 ... eqn 2

    Eqn 1 by 5 ... 5M+5P=1200 ... eqn3

    Eqn 2 - eqn 3: 3M = 414

    Thus M = 138

    Subst for M in eqn 1: 138 + P = 240

    Thus P = 102

    102 cans of popcorn sold

138 cans of mixed nuts sold
