    Xy = 8

    x + y = 6

    x + y = 6

    x - x + y = - x + 6

    y = - x + 6

    xy = 8

    x (-x + 6) = 8

    x (-x) + x (6) = 8

    -x² + 6x = 8

    -x² + 6x - 8 = 0

    -1 (x²) - 1 (-6x) - 1 (8) = 0

    -1 (x² - 6x + 8) = 0

    -1 - 1

    x² - 6x + 8 = 0

    x² - 4x - 2x + 8 = 0

    x (x) - x (4) - 2 (x) + 2 (4) = 0

    x (x - 4) - 2 (x - 4) = 0

    (x - 2) (x - 4) = 0

    x - 2 = 0 or x - 4 = 0

    + 2 + 2 + 4 + 4

    x = 2 or x = 4

    x + y = 6

    2 + y = 6

    - 2 - 2

    y = 4

    (x, y) = (2, 4)

    or

    x + y = 6

    4 + y = 6

    - 4 - 4

    y = 2

    (x, y) = (4, 2)

    The two numbers that add up to 6 and multiply to 8 are 4 and 2.
