The two numbers (12 and 16) share common factors (1, 2, 4). The greatest of these is 4 and that is the greatest common factor. Or

Solution by Factorization:
The factors of 1 are: 1
The factors of 12 are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12
The factors of 16 are: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16
Then the greatest common factor is 1.
