    Her weekly allowance is x.

    She spent half of the allowance, so she spent x/2 and had another x/2 left.

    Then she earned $4. Now she has x/2 + 4.

    She ended up with $12, so x/2 + 4 = 12

    x/2 + 4 = 12

    Subtract 4 from both sides.

    x/2 = 8

    Multiply both sides by 2.

    x = 16

    Answer: Her weekly allowance is $16.

    a = Imani's allowance

    She spent half of it on mini-golf,

    a/2

    And earned $4 from her parents,

    a/2 + 4

    And ended the week with $12, so

    a/2 + 4 = 12

    Solve for a by isolating it, and you'll have your answer.

    Move the + 4 over by subtracting 4 from both sides:

    a/2 + 4 - 4 = 12 - 4

    + 4 - 4 cancels out, so you should have a/2 = 8

    Now, get rid of the denominator 2, multiply both sides 2,

    a * a/2 = 8 * 2

    2 times the denominator of 2 cancels out, and you're left with your answer.

    So,

    a = 16
