    The first equation defines y for us, so all we have to do is substitute 2x - 2 into the 2nd equation for y and solve.

    8x + 2 (2x - 2) = - 16

    8x + 4x - 4 = - 16

    12x - 4 = - 16

    12x = - 12

    x = - 1

    Now that we have a value for x, we substitute - 1 back into one of the equations to find the y value.

    y = 2x - 2

    y = 2 (-1) - 2

    y = - 2 - 2

    y = - 4

    So our solution set is

    (-1, - 4)
