At a bake sale there were 72 raisin cookies sold. If the ratio of raisin cookies sold to oatmeal cookies sold was 9:1, what is the combined amount of raisin and oatmeal cookies sold? Explain how to do the problem!

    What we can actually do is multiply both sides of the ratio by x:

    9x/x = 72/x

    The two x's cancel out:

    9x = 72

    x = 8

    So:

    72:8

    Because we're solving for the total, 72 + 8 = 80.

    80 cookies were sold in total
