The dog has gone 5/8 of the way across the yard. How much farther does it have to go to reach the gate?

    Well if one assumes that the dog is starting at one side opposite the gate and is heading directly for it, then it has 3/8 of the yard to go. However since one cannot know where the dog has started his movement toward the gate then the answer would not be solvable without more information.
