can recall trying to explain to my children that thunder is the sound that lightning makes. It took some time for them to understand this because there is often a delay of many seconds between seeing the lightning and hearing the thunder. Lightning travels at 186,000 miles per second, whereas thunder travels at approximately 750 miles per hour. Let's say that you see a flash of lightning and 3 seconds later you hear the thunder. How far away did the lightning strike?
