    The expression two times the difference of one-third of a number and three is 9 is equivalent to

    9 = 2[ (1/3) x - 3]

    Evaluate this expression by distributing 2 to both terms

    9 = 2x/3 - 6

    Add 6 to both sides to eliminate 6 on the right side

    9 + 6 = 2x/3 - 6 + 6

    15 = 2x/3

    Multiply 3 to both sides to eliminate the denominator three

    15*3 = (2x/3) * 3

    45 = 2x

    And then divide the term by 2

    x = 45/2

    x = 22.5
