Melanie went to the hardware store and bought 2 1/2 gallons of white paint and 1 1/4 gallons of black paint. How many gallons of paint did Melanie buy altogether?

    1 1/9 + 2 1/3

    change the 1/3 to 9th's so we have

    1 1/9 + 2 3/9 = 3 4/9
