A coach wants to see if drinking water during a race improves times. To test this, he has his runners run around a track for 10 miles each practice, and lets half of them drink during the run, and half do not, varying the halves each day, for a 2 week period.     This is an experiment. The coach has two groups, one control and one not, and independent) (run length) and dependent (water) variables. May I add that varying the groups is a smart move because it reduces the risk of injury to his players.
