What you would need to do is find the GCF. GCF means the greatest common factor. You can factor the number into primes and take the smallest. 7 is a factor of 42. Since 7x6=42 and 7x14=98, so it's a common factor. So is 2. We could factor 42 as 7x3x2 and 98 as 7x7x2. So from this I hope you understand that 7 and 2 is the common factor and 14 is the GCF.
