    First I would turn the mixed fractions into improper fractions so it will be easier division. That would make 4 3/4 become 19/4 and 11 7/8 become 95/8. Next, the formula for area is length x width = area. If you plug in the numbers, it will become 19/4x=95/8, x being the width. You would divide 95/8 by 19/4 and end up with 5/2 or 2 1/2.

    A=B*H where B=base, H=height and A=area

    area = 11 and 7/8

    B = 4 and 3/4

    let H = x

    11 and 7/8=4 and 3/4 * x

    x = (11 and 7/8) / (4 and 3/4)

    x = 5/2

    Therefore the width of the tabletop is 2.5 feet
