    There were 14 birds

    Step-by-step explanation:

    Be

    x = number of birds

    y = number of cats

    4$*x + 6.5$*y = 212$ (total spent on thursday)

    x + y = 38 (total number of birds and cats)

    y = 38 - x

    4$*x + 6.5$ * (38 - x) = 212$

    -2.5$ x = - 35$

    x = 14 (number of birds)

    y = 24 (number of cats)
