Jake leaves school to go home. He walks 9 blocks North and 12 blocks West. How far is Jake from the school?

    We use the Pythagorean theorem on this problem. The path Jake walks forms a triangle with legs of 9 and 12 blocks. Therefore the hypotenuse, or middle section, is the distance from the school. 9^2+12^2=81+144=225. The square root of 225 is 15, meaning Jake is 15 block from school.
