Part A:

x + y = 50

y = x + 20

Part B:

x = 50 - y

y = 50 - y + 20

2 y = 70

y = 70 : 2

y = 35

Ted spends 35 minutes on practicing the breast stroke every day.

If x = 45 than y = 45 + 20 = 65

45 + 65 = 110 < 50
