When standing upright, gary knows his eyes are 6 feet above ground level. to determine the depth of a well, he stands in the position shown. a 6 foot tall man stands 2 feet away from a 6 foot wide well of unknown depth. the man's line of sight intersects the far bottom corner of the well. using the given measures, how deep is the well?

    Observer E stands two feet away from the edge of the well D and looks down to the bottom of the well on the opposite side B.

    By similar triangles, we have

    Depth of the well = (6' radius/2 ft away) * 6' high = 18 feet
