    The problem says that both expressions are equal so we can set them equal hence an equation.

    Equation: 14 + x = 20

    As we have set the two expressions that are equivalent to each other (as said so in the problem), our next goal is to solve for the unkown number. To get our unkown number or in other words the number that is the solution for the equation, we subtract 14 from both sides. 20-14 is equal to 6. Now we know that x is 6 so the solution for the equation consisting of the 2 equal expressions is not 2, 5, or 10, but 6.
