    5x - 7 = 4x - 1 ... subtract 4x from both sides

    5x - 4x - 7 = - 1 ... add 7 to both sides

    5x - 4x = - 1 + 7 ... simplify

    x = 6

    This one is quite simple. Subtract 4x from both sides, and you get x-7=-1. Add 7 on both sides, and you get x=6
