    Answer: There are 40 cars and 5 motorcycles at the end of buying and selling. He started with 9 motorcycles and 36 cars.

    Step-by-step explanation:

    x=# of motorcycles 4x=# of cars

    8 (x-4) = 4x+4

    8x-32=4x+4

    4x=36

    x=9

    ---

    4 (9) + 4=36+4=40

    9-4=5

    Now in the Garage he has 40 cars and 5 motorcycles.

    Step-by-step explanation:

    let

    Number of motorcycles = x

    He had 4 times more cars than motorcycles, so, Number of cars = 4x

    He bought 4 more cars, so equation becomes: 4x+4

    And sold 4 motorcycles, so: x-4

    now there were 8 times more cars than motorcycles:

    so we equate it like this:

    8 (x-4) = 4x+4

    solving the above equation:

    8x-32=4x+4

    4x=36

    we find the value of X.

    which is: x=9

    Now put it in the equation of cars to find out number of cars

    the equation was: 4x+4

    solving it:

    no of cars = 4 (9) + 4

    =36+4

    No of cars = 40.

    Now solving it for motorcycles: x-4

    9-4

    no of motorcycles = 5
