    ½x + 6 = - ¾x - 4 Multiply each side by 4

    2x + 24 = - 3x - 16 Add 16 to each side

    40 = - 5x Divide each side by - 5

    (3) x = - 8 Substitute (2) into (1)

    y = ½ (-8) + 6

    = - 4 + 6

    = 2

    The solution to the system of equations is (-8,2).
