A can is in the shape of a right circular cylinder. The circumference of the base of the can is 12 inches, and the height of the can is 5 inches. A spiral strip is painted on the can in such a way that it winds around the can exactly once as it reaches from the bottom of the can to the top. It reaches the top of the can directly above the spot where it left the bottom. What is the length in inches of the stripe?

    the length of the stripe is 20.82inches

    Step-by-step explanation:

    given

    height of can = 5in

    circumference = 12in

    π = 3.142

    the circumference of the base = 2πr = 12

    radius of base = 1.91in

    if the stripe wind once round the can (circumference length), it will start from the radius base to the radius top.

    the total length of the stripe = 2radius + circumference of can + height

    = 2 (1.91) + 12 + 5 = 20.82inches
