    Let's solve your equation step-by-step.

    9.7x + 8.2 = 5.9x - 7

    Step 1: Subtract 5.9x from both sides.

    9.7x + 8.2 - 5.9x = 5.9x

    -7 - 5.9x 3.8x + 8.2 = - 7

    Step 2: Subtract 8.2 from both sides.

    3.8x + 8.2 - 8.2 = - 7 - 8.2

    3.8x = - 15.2

    Step 3: Divide both sides by 3.8.

    3.8x / 3.8 = - 15.2 / 3.8

    x = - 4
