If each cube is (1/3) inch on each side, then the volume of each cube is

    (1/3) * (1/3) * (1/3) = (1 / 27) of a cubic inch

    3,996 of those (1 / 27) inch cubes =

    3,996 * (1 / 27) = 148 cubic inches
