You need to add a piece of 3 / 4 - inch rigid conduit between a section of conduit that ends at a distance of 5 feet from a wall and an outlet box that's located 4 feet up the wall. If you're going to thread the new piece before bending it, the length of conduit required will be

a. 9 feet 4 inches.

b. 8 feet 8 inches.

    To calculate the distance the conduit needs to surpass, you have to add the values first, because the conduit will follow the ground and wall in a linear way. That gives us at least (4+5) feet to be covered, which discards options b and d.

    And because we need a bit of extra length for the threading, the only logical available answer is a, 9 feet 4 inches.
