Todd has some nickels, dimes, and quarters which total $2.50. He has twice as many quarters as dimes and four times as many quarters as nickels. How many quarters does he have?

    Let x be the number of quarters. With this representation and the given above, the number of dimes is equal to x/2. Similarly, the number of the nickels that Todd has is x/4.

    The equivalent of a nickel is $0.05 or 5 cents. The value of dime is $0.10 or 10 cents and that of a quarter is $0.25 or 25 cents. The equation that would allow us to determine the answer to this question is,

    (0.25) (x) + (0.10) (x/2) + (0.05) (x/4) = 2.5

    The value of x from the equation is 8.
