Less than 42 ft. of fencing was used to enclose a rectangular lot that has a length 12 ft. less than 3 times the width. If the width must be a whole number, find its greatest possible value.

    P = 2 (L + W)

    P < = 42

    L = 3W - 12

    42 < = 2 (3W - 12 + W)

    42 < = 6W - 24 + 2W

    42 < = 8W - 24

    42 + 24 < = 8W

    66 < = 8W

    66/8 < = W

    8.25 < = W

    The greatest possible whole number is 8 ... ur width is 8 ft
