    Answer: The average rate of change from x=-1 to x=2 is - 1

    Solution:

    f (x) = x^4-2x^3

    x f (x)

    -1 3

    0 0

    1 - 1

    2 0

    3 27

    Average rate of change from x=-1 to x=2: r=?

    Average rate of change from x=a to x=b: r=[f (b) - f (a) ] / (b-a); a=-1, b=2

    a=-1→f (a) = f (-1) = 3 See table

    b=2→f (b) = f (2) = 0 See table

    Replacing the values in the formula:

    r = (0-3) / (2 - (-1))

    r = (-3) / (2+1)

    r = (-3) / (3)

    r=-1

    Answer: The average rate of change from x=-1 to x=2 is - 1
