    Step-by-step explanation:

    (1) P = 5G

    (2) G + P = 30

    Substituting (1) into (2) gives:

    G + 5G = 30

    6G = 30

    G = 5

    So there are 5 green pencils.

    Now using that in (1) gives us P = 5 x 5 = 25

    So there are 5 green pencils and 25 purple pencils.
