    The equation is 2x+x=27

    2x means Jay caught twice as much as Blair. and x is the amount of fish Blair caught.

    2x+x=27

    combine the like terms

    3x+27

    divide 3 on both sides

    x=9

    so Jay caught 18 fish, and Blair caught 9
