Lucas is looking at the two numbers below 76,345 and 34,675. He determined that the value of 6 in 76,345 is 100 times the value of the 6 in 34,675. Is Lucas right? Explain why Lucas is right or wrong. Use place value knowledge to show how a digit in thousands place is similar to and different from a digit in the hundreds place.

    Lucas is wrong.

    The value of the 6 int 76,345 is only 10 times the value of the 6 in 34,675

    The six in the larger number represents 6,000 and in the smaller number it os 600.

    (600 x 10 = 6000 so it is only 10 times bigger.

    The way they are similar is that they both are 6 x 10 to a certain power.

    600 is 6 x 10² and 6000 ix 6 x 10³
