    Replace A with 1 in the equation.

    1) 7 (5*1-4) - 1=14-8*1

    2) 7 (5-4) - 1=14-8

    3) (7*5) - (7*4) - 1=14-8

    4) 35-28-1=14-8

    5) 7-1=6

    6) 6=6

    The answers are equal so A=1

    7 (5a - 4) - 1 = - 8a + 14

    7 (5a) - 7 (4) - 1 = - 8a + 14

    35a - 28 - 1 = - 8a + 14

    35a - 29 = - 8a + 14

    + 8a + 8a

    43a - 29 = 14

    + 29 + 29

    43a = 43

    43 43

    a = 1
