Here are 56 trees in an apple orchard. They are arranged in equal rows. There are 8 trees in each row. How many rows of apple trees are there? Which equation can be used to solve this problem?

    let x be the no. of trees and let y be the no. of rows ...

    Sol.

    xy=56

    8y=56

    8y/8=56/8 - --divide both sides by 8 to find y

    y=7 ... so there were 7 rows with 8 apple trees each row ...
