A clothing pattern calls for 4.81 yd2 of fabric. How many square inches of fabric does the pattern use?

    The answer is 6215.75 square inches. The area of the fabric is 4.81 square yards so taking the square root of that I get approx 2.19 yards. Checking, 2.19 x 2.19 yards = 4.81 sq yds. I yard is 36 inches so 2.19 x 36 = 78.84 inches and when this is squared ie 78.84 x 78.84 you get 6215.75 square inches.

    1296 square inches makes one square yard.

    Therefore total square inches =

    1296x4.81 = 6233.76 square inches
