Firstly convert 1/2 into quarters.

1/2 = 2/4 (double the numerator and denominator)

Then add the two, 2/4 + 1/4 (add the numerators)

2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4

The answer is: 3/4

1/2 = 2/4 as we need to make the denominator the same
