Although the earth's orbit about the sun is elliptical, the average distance from the earth to the sun is approximately 93 million miles. It takes the earth 365.25 days to make one complete revolution around the sun. What is the linear speed of the earth, in miles per day, as it travels around the sun?

    The approximate circumference of the orbit is 93 x 2 x PI = 584.34 billion miles.

    Divide that by the number of days:

    584.34 / 365.25 = 1.6 million miles a day
