    3/7 = 240/x ... 3 non-fiction to 7 fiction = 240 non fiction to x fiction

    cross multiply

    (3) (x) = (240) (7)

    3x = 1680

    x = 1680/3

    x = 560

    so we have 240 non-fiction books and 560 fiction books ... for a total of

    (240 + 560) = 800 books <==
