    Step-by-step explanation:

    Let the first number be x, and the second number be y.

    x + y = 5

    x - y = 2

    Solve for x in first equation.

    x + y = 5

    x = 5 - y

    Put x as 5-y in the second equation, and solve for y.

    (5-y) - y = 2

    5 - 2y = 2

    -2y = - 3

    y = 3/2

    Put y as 3/2 in the first equation and solve for x.

    x + y = 5

    x + 3/2 = 5

    x = 7/2

    The difference of their squares would be:

    (7/2) ² - (3/2) ²

    49/4 - 9/4

    40/4 = 10
