    Answer: There were 5 cats on Thursday.

    Step-by-step explanation:

    4.5x + 8.5y = 235

    x + y = 30: y = 30-x

    4.5x + 8.5 (30-x) = 235

    4.5x + 255 - 8.50x = 235

    -4x = 235-255

    x = 20/4 = 5

    y = 30-5 = 25

    So, 4.5 (5) + 8.5 (25) = 235
